Edward James Olmos is out as ‘The Dark Knight,’ now ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Edward James Olmos has dropped out of the title role in Universal’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” because the studio believes the iconic character is too similar to the DC Comics character, the studio announced Saturday.

The decision to cast a new Batman has ruffled feathers among fans, who have hoped to see the character played by the Oscar-nominated actor.

Olmos has played the role twice, first as a police commissioner in the 1990 film. He then reprised the role for the Christopher Nolan-directed sequel, “The Dark Knight Rises,” a year later.

Now, the studio has opted to go back to the drawing board.

“While we are disappointed that Edward James Olmos will not be playing the role of Bruce Wayne, we are incredibly excited to introduce the next chapter of the Dark Knight franchise with an all-new actor,” the studio said in a statement.

The job of playing Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, has remained vacant since the film’s director, Zack Snyder, stepped down after the premiere of “Man of Steel” in 2013.
