Rise of the Digital Branch: Why People Are Losing Their Banks and What the Future of Small Businesses Looks Like. How high shall we go?

I was driving home from school yesterday afternoon, and I saw a sign outside a bank on the side of the road that I drove by several times. Someone had posted a sign on the side of a road!

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of the idea. Now I’m not naïve enough to think that there’s really any possibility of a bank falling down into the ground and going out of business, but I do think there’s something to be said for the degree to which it’s become very difficult to get the attention and focus of the small business owner when a banking crisis is about to occur.

I was driven to write this particular blog entry by the recent and immediate closing of a bank I had just recently opened in my area. My new community is small enough that I think it’s unlikely that it would have trouble borrowing from its local bank, but we were nevertheless forced to go to another bank in our community to find a line of credit.

The closing of the bank occurred on the same day as my presentation to the Midland Young Professionals Group and I was simply not prepared for the resulting reaction to the closings. In fact, in the days following, I was amazed at the people who came up to me at the meeting and told me that I had cheered them up at their worst moment. (Well, I certainly couldn’t argue with that!)
