In previous Lightroom versions, you could change the perspective of a digital painting, although you needed to open a new file in Photoshop to truly do so. In version 5.5, you can now use the Transform View option in Photoshop to change perspectives directly in Lightroom. This is a great capability, because it allows the user the freedom to study a section of an image without having to open the whole image in Photoshop.

It is also possible, and perhaps this is more convenient, to capture an image, apply a Transform View option, and then save the modified section of the image in a new file directly in Lightroom. There is also the option of opening the file in Photoshop after the transformation has been completed in Lightroom, although this takes more time.

The bottom line, however, is that you can adjust the perspective in Photoshop directly in Lightroom and that the file remains in your catalog. You may decide to partially change the file, perhaps by cropping an image that you captured in Lightroom. It is not necessary to open a new file in Photoshop to make the change.

Overall, Lightroom 5.5 is a great update. I am expecting to encounter some day when I review Lightroom 6 (which today is already out, though as yet I have not had the time to upgrade), but certainly Lightroom 5.5 has the potential to attract more users to Adobe products. It may be that because of version 5 of the in-house Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom users are increasingly attracted to the company.

In most cases, you’ll want to click the thumbnails next to the File, Open Folder, and Device buttons on the left. A pop-up menu will appear with thumbnails of your image files.

Watch it! You might be too late if you start to click “OK” before you see the pop-up menu. Anyway, click the thumbnail that you want to open—if you have multiple files in your folder, you’ll get a menu of thumbnails. Choose which file you want to open—and Photoshop will open it for you.

As part of this migration to FCPX, we are also investing in making the file types easier to work with. For those customers currently using the RC bundled with DNG as the sole supported format for image and raw data, we are providing DNG support as a native plug-in to Photoshop.

For those customers currently using PSD, PSB or Substance 3D files as the main production work flows, we are providing a PSB to PSD converter as part of the update. We goal is for this converter to be the only option available to visit PSB files in Photoshop.

Earlier this year, we announced and launched a new high fidelity, high performance GPU graphics API, OSM, to enable GPU acceleration for all of Photoshop. With the introduction of OSM, we have added a new level of performance to layers, text, and video production in Photoshop CC. The performance of DNG previews is key for helping designers with low-resolution images visit PSD files natively in fusion mode.
