This weekend, Cyril Rioli suffered a broken leg and fellow player Tom Scully won’t be returning until next season, meaning Jarryd Roughead is likely to return home a year earlier than expected.

Roughead was reportedly set to return in the final round of the season against the Gold Coast and face North Melbourne in the preliminary final, but after being put through the paces at the MCG on Friday, the Hawks announced it wouldn’t be returning until next year.

That means Roughead will miss all of the 2019 season including the finals series.

The 26-year-old kicked 15 goals in the Hawks’ final four matches, including a two-goal effort against the Fremantle Dockers on Friday, but his absence will be a huge blow for the club’s forward line, with more than half of his season gone.

“Jarryd had a cracking night at training on Friday and it looked as though his foot was strong, but he had some calf tightness in the early part of the second quarter. He decided to play on and after a mark on him in the third quarter, he exited the field,” Hawks medical director John Laidlaw said in a statement.

“He’s a strong and powerful boy and will be back stronger for next year.”

Roughead had been told the injury was a matter of time and a bone bruise, but it’s a cruel twist of fate for a player who arrived at the Hawks with such bravado.

After spending two seasons at the Hawthorn Football Club in the SANFL, Roughead was part of a package deal that sent Brad Hill to the Adelaide Crows at the start of 2012.

But if there is a silver lining to the club’s horror injury, it will allow a number of other players to return early from their injuries including midfielder Jaeger O’Meara, who missed seven games with a hamstring, and speedster Tom Mitchell, who has missed almost the entire season with a knee injury.

O’Meara could play in the Hawks’ final three matches and Mitchell could return in the last weekend of the season, while key forward Jack Gunston will also be fit to return in the final round.
